Getting the final year of dental school right

Studying to become a dentist requires focus, drive and the ability to prioritise lots of things at once. Each academic year presents different challenges to navigate – especially in your final year.
Here, final year students from Peninsula Plymouth Dental School offer their top tips on how best to approach your final year of dental school.
Focus on key requirements
Pay attention to your minimum procedure requirements. Don’t become complacent – the sooner they’re done, the less stress you will have when it comes to other aspects of the course.
Planning is key
Plan appointments effectively, considering lab turnaround dates. You should also have backup plans for appointments in case your lab-work isn’t received on time.
Use your support system
Talk to your clinical partner, helping and encouraging each other as much as you can. Keep reflecting and talking about how you can work more effectively as a team. An example of this is completing each other’s clinical notes.
Also, make the most of your supervisors. It’s unlikely that you’ll have the same kind of support available in the future. Get to know them and learn about their experiences of dentistry as a career.
Know what's on the horizon
Keep a planner of dates and deadlines. Knowing when assessments are due can help you to prepare adequately. Completing them early can help you stay in control of your workload.
Start early
Work on your Exit Case from the beginning of the year. This will help you to manage your workload and plan treatments and appointments. And don’t forget to take photos!
