Unoccupied home insurance

Insuring your home when you're not there to look after it

Unoccupied home insurance will keep you covered when your home is left empty, whether short-term (typically 30 days+) or more permanently. Working with a panel of insurers offering bespoke policies, Wesleyan Financial Services can help you find the right level of protection.

Have a property that's unoccupied?

Most home insurance policies will not provide cover if the property has been left empty for 30 days* or more. Unoccupied home insurance will provide peace of mind that your home and its contents are protected when you aren't around to keep an eye on them.

Reasons you may need unoccupied home insurance include:

  • Awaiting the sale of a house after moving into a new one
  • The property is a holiday or second home that's left vacant when not in use
  • You're going away for an extended period, longer than the 30 days covered by standard home insurance
As a broker, Wesleyan Financial Services searches a panel of leading unoccupied home insurance providers for you. We find the best policy for your needs, offering an advice-based service to help you choose insurance that covers your empty home. Charges may apply.

* There are some home insurers that will automatically give up to 60 consecutive days, but more commonly it is 30. Please refer to your home insurance provider to confirm the length your property is covered for when empty.

What will your unoccupied home insurance cover?

  • Storm, fire or flood damage
Damage to your home due to storm, fire or flood.
  • Escape of water or oil
Damage caused by a burst pipe, or a leakage of oil or water somewhere in the house.
  • Theft and/or attempted theft
A successful or attempted break-in that causes damage to the property and/or loss of belongings.
  • Vandalism
Criminal damage to your home in your absence.
  • Property owners liability insurance
Damage or injury caused by a property you are responsible for. For instance, a falling roof tile striking a caller to your door.

What won't your unoccupied home insurance cover?

  • Unforced entry
Leaving your doors and windows unlocked or open is generally a sure-fire way to void a home insurance policy, giving access to thieves or squatters, without forcing entry.
  • Contractors
You might not be covered for any damage caused by contractors working on your home, as they should have their own insurance.
